Create a Podcast

One of the most popular ways of getting your message out in your own voice is the podcasts. A podcast is a series of digital media files either audio or video)distributed over the Internet for playback on a mobile device. Podcast

The easiest way to record a podcast is to use your personal computer with a microphone plugged in. Even though you can do it with the default microphone, the quality of the recording will be better with a dedicated microphone. There are sites that let you put up your podcast for free, and help you submit the podcast to iTunes, Podcast Alley, and other popular podcast aggregators.

Podcast Toolkit

Here is a list of must-have, and absolutely free software that will make it easier to podcast.

  • Skype- allows you to talk to guests and co-hosts for free
  • Powergrammo- records the Skype session to be included into the podcast
  • Jing - captures a screen, or up to 5 minutes of screen activity to include into a podcast
  • Audacity - Sound recording and editing software that lets you add voiceovers, combine different recording sessions, and record.

You may also want to have music in your podcast. It is illegal to use unlicensed music in your podcast, but if you have musical talent, or friends with talent, you can use Audacity to record the music. There are also several iPhone apps that let you play an on-screen piano (NLogfree), or guitar (Touchchords) and save the performance. Using a line-out cable in the headphone jack of the phone, and the microphone jack of the personal computer, you can play the file on the phone and record it on the computer.

Content of Your Podcast

Before you start talking, you need to have something to say. The object is be natural and conversational, but get to the point. As Winston Churchill said, “I'm just preparing my impromptu remarks”, you should plan the structure of your podcast and note some talking points. Most podcasts follow some kind of repeating format with subsections. There is frequently an introduction, and a wrap-up, and anything goes in between. Here are some examples of podcast, both audio and video.
