Kanika Vats has put together a Virtual Box image to use for development.

If you'd still like to build things from scratch -- I recommend the first
thing you do is try using ubuntu 8.04lts.  Everything we do is on that
version of Ubuntu and I suspect you may be running into some problems due to
different versions of Python - I think 9.10 uses Python 2.6.
