This is a great questions.  You are right you should generate your key from
the vm.  You'll want to have your private key on whatever box/server you are
using for development.   Alternately, you can upload multiple public keys to
launchpad if you want to create a few key pairs.

Everyone needs their own key-pair.

Kanika Vats - don't forget to include some sort of .txt file with login
information and maybe some quick install instructions.
