[Systers-dev] Systers - Spread the word: Press Guidelines

I will make the same post to the original Systers mailing list, as well, to
get suggestions and contributions from fellow Systers.
There is a request, can anyone suggest guidelines for both Systers and
Systers-dev groups? I think that these points go for Systers, in case they
opt to help in publicity:
* while it's great to talk about systers, remember that the conversations
that go on here are private. Do not quote or paraphrase anything another
syster has said (unless it is obvious public information, like a public URL)
without her permission. It's tempting to tell people about this great
discussion that went on over at systers about a harrassing boss (say), but
if you mention that a syster talked about being fired, or any other specific
detail, no matter how innocent it seems, you run the risk of sharing
something the syster thought was going to stay within systers. (the point
mentioned by Robin)
* Not disclose who is or isnt a part of the Systers; you can speak for
yourself but not others, in case they choose not to disclose (the same
reason why the whole list of subscribers isnt available for view for all
members)
I think that the members of Systers-dev can help in maintaining the mailing
list (fixing bug and working with the code of GNU Mailman) as well as they
can help in spreading the word about the group. They can maintain
blogs/social networking sites/microblogging accounts because these are
public modes of communication and in any case, if any confidential
discussion takes place then it wont be confidential (as in the case of
mailing list, where the communication is private). A GSOC applicant had
already started an unofficial systers blog (http://systers-soc.blogspot.com/)
and I do not feel that if any external member maintains a similar
communication channel, it breaches the policy or privacy of Systers.
As far as the logo designing was concerned I think that it can be open to
both the Systers as well as external volunteers. We can announce the logo
designing contest in the mailing list as well as publicaly (announce on
blogs/twitter/social networking groups). The best entry will get his/her
name published officially (or even get a small cash prize, optional, or
anything similar). I guess this way we can get a lot of people's attention
towards the group. I understand that Systers hasnt felt the need to
publicitise its existence and it has served its purpose all these years
effeciently. But I definitely feel that all the women in technical areas who
have not known about it and need to be a part of such a group can be
definitely helped this way. If we can welcome many more women into the group
and share their thoughts/ideas/enthusiasm it will definitely be a big boon
to the community.
Hope I hav ebeen able to make my points clear,
~kr0y.
